Mark Shortt organized the Greater Lansing CrossFit 5 Gallon Challenge

In February, Greater Lansing CrossFit‘s owners Anthony and Stacey Nye approached me with a desire to give back to the community with some sort of fundraiser, and they knew I had a passion for clean water and helping those who need it most around the world. I immediately thought of Water For Good’s Five Gallon Challenge and thought that would be a perfect way to bring our community together for a great cause.

We branded our event “Fitness For Purpose” and connected with Ryan Hill from CrossFit Haymaker in Warsaw, IN who had previously done the Five Gallon Challenge to gather as much info as we could. Many local businesses and individuals partnered with us to make this event possible, including printing custom Five Gallon Challenge t-shirts, donating a sound system, and providing portable bathrooms and a big tent for the event! We were very fortunate to have the founder of Water for Good, Jim Hocking, make the drive up from Indiana to join us on the day of the event as well.

The results?

In total, 155 gallons were carried 31 miles, and over $1,500 was raised to provide clean water to people in the CAR. That’s 300 people in the Central African Republic who will have clean water for the next year. 300 people who WON’T have to make the walk each day carrying heavy loads of water.

All of us here at Greater Lansing CrossFit had a great time at Fitness For Purpose, and we are looking forward to doing it again next year!
